Work packages

The HubHarmony project has a clear strategy to achieve the best outcome of the activities and the work plan is divided in seven work packages (WP).

WP1 Project Management
WP1, led by BOKU, is the overall Project Management WP that will ensure co-ordination, co-operation, establishing the management of the project (technical, financial and administrative) and a smooth communication system among partners, external interested parties and the ERANET Technical Secretariat.

WP2 Initial Analysis
The objective of WP2, led by BOKU, is to prepare the basis for further analysis, consisting of:
Categorisation of main inland multimodal hub types including subtypes.

  • Analysis of different information requirements of various stakeholder groups.
  • Qualitative analysis on how well each hub type performs for each of the three pillars of sustainability.
  • Description of advantages potentially resulting from the physical proximity of certain hub types within the hub network and which are beneficial for the interoperability of a hub.

WP3 Value Added Services
In WP3, led by ILiM, a Value Added Service Catalogue will be developed. It will list:

  • Value added services currently offered at inland multimodal hubs and by international forerunners.
  • Long-term concept of future value added services at the interface of the Physical Internet.
  • Outlook of future value added services with particular attention on renewable energies and utility consumption.

WP4 Impact

The objectives of WP4, led by BOKU, are to:

  • Identify how and where future value added services interact with local communities.
  • Identify the impacts of future value added services on the sustainability of each hub type.
  • Visualise (causal loop diagrams) and discuss innovation dynamics and impacts of future value added services on local economies, the setting and the design of inland multimodal hubs and, thus, on the system’s sustainability. This step will foster the awareness of hub operators, hub planners and policy makers about the architectural, technical and organisational changes which inland multimodal hubs might have to undergo. The analysis shall encourage stakeholders to facilitate opportunities and mitigate threats these changes may bring.
  • List key findings that require particular attention in the planning process of future hubs.

WP5 Scoring System – The Harmonization Benchmark
WP5, led by BOKU, ill define the set of criteria which are required to describe the level of harmonization of the identified hub types through the development of a Criteria Catalogue, including:

  • Operational procedures (and, if part of the operational procedure: hub technologies, business processes and administrative aspects), which foster the interoperability of hubs and support a smooth collaboration,
  • Services offered (including current and very promising future services, also in the field of the Physical Internet, renewable energies and utility consumption),
  • Aspects of sustainability, including economic, social and environmental ones.
  • Selection of measurable and comparable indicators by means of their consistency in order to describe the harmonization level of the identified inland multimodal hub types.
  • Harmonization benchmark (scoring model) to measure the harmonization level of inland multimodal hubs.

WP6 Empirical tests and the harmonization benchmark
WP6, led by BOKU, tests the developed scoring system empirically. The specific WP objectives include:

  • Testing the developed scoring system empirically.
  • Provide insight into the national dynamics which European-wide harmonization progresses for logistics infrastructure need to deal with (arising from national prerequisites in the area of national regulations, weather conditions, security aspects and geographical differences, including aspects of land use).
  • Test and depict the impact of different preferences (caused by exogenous aspects) on the scoring system and to outline trade-offs between environmental, social and economic aspects.
  • Finalise the harmonization benchmark, which will make it possible to select the exogenous variables (i) hub types and (ii) the setting of the hub within the hub network.
  • Provide new key insights and draw conclusions, which are of high importance to policy makers.

WP7 Dissemination
WP7, Dissemination of project results, led by ILIM, will ensure a broad dissemination of project activities and results, allowing knowledge sharing, particularly among networks dealing with research and industry.
